Intended Parent's Journey
As an intended parent, it’s normal to have multiple thoughts and hesitations about surrogacy, as it is not an easy procedure, either medically or financially. A significant amount of research and preparation is necessary for intended parents to familiarize themselves with the process. We strongly advise thorough research and reading, as a better understanding of surrogacy can help you significantly reduce the expenses associated with it.
Even though we consistently maintain high success rates, every potential parent must realize that surrogacy is a field where unexpected occurrences can happen. That’s why we tirelessly work every day — through our attentiveness, vigilant process control, use of advanced equipment, and coordinated examination and testing procedures—to minimize the risks associated with surrogacy and help you avoid unforeseen financial surprises. Below, we have compiled some relevant questions and information that will hopefully help future parents understand surrogacy better.
Understanding Surrogacy Packages
Numerous companies offer various packages that outline the costs associated with the surrogacy process, and these costs can vary significantly between packages. Intended parents may find it challenging to navigate through these options because while one package includes a particular service, another may exclude the same service. In some cases, intended parents may unexpectedly receive calls about additional fees they must pay. Therefore, understanding this "package system" will help you navigate through them and significantly reduce the chances of future misunderstandings.
Three Tries
At the fertilization stage, package prices primarily derive from the successful fertilization cycle. A successful fertilization cycle involves transferring an embryo, fertilized in the laboratory using the donor's or intended father's sperm, into the surrogate's uterus. If this procedure fails on the first attempt, it must be repeated, which can occur multiple times. The standard "three tries" package includes three attempts at the in vitro fertilization cycle. If all three attempts fail, the intended parents will be responsible for covering the additional costs for any subsequent fertilization cycles.
Unlimited
On the other hand, an unlimited package requires a higher upfront payment, but it guarantees that the company will continue the procedure until successful fertilization is achieved, regardless of how many embryo transfers fail. In addition to other factors—such as the age of the egg donor and surrogate, the surrogate’s uterine receptivity, the physician’s expertise, embryo transfer timing, and even the room temperature during the transfer—luck also plays a role. Intended parents may choose the unlimited package out of concern for transfer failures but might achieve successful transfer on their very first attempt. Conversely, some parents may opt for a lower-priced package for financial reasons, only to end up paying more in the long run.
Therefore, parents need to be aware that certain risks exist in the surrogacy process, and not everything will go smoothly. This is why it is essential to find an experienced and trustworthy agency to help minimize these risks.
Other Packages
Regarding other types of packages, they vary based on the expenses companies are willing to cover in case complications arise during any stage—whether at the embryo transfer stage, gestational stage, perinatal stage, or neonatal stage. Potential complications could include the costs of an abortion if preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) reveals that the fetus has chromosomal abnormalities or other developmental issues, the costs of a cesarean section, or fees associated with neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) services in the event of preterm delivery, among others. Therefore, we strongly advise intended parents to educate themselves about the surrogacy process and the services offered by various companies. The Soranus Surrogacy communication team is available to provide you with more detailed information about surrogacy and guide you through each procedure.
Finding the Right Egg Donor
Choosing a suitable egg donor can be complex and somewhat overwhelming for intended parents. They must determine what qualities they seek in a donor. Should the egg donor be a striking Cambridge graduate with multiple natural gifts and talents? While these factors are certainly worth considering, it’s essential to recognize that there is no guarantee that the child will inherit the intellectual, musical, or athletic traits of the donor. Just because an egg donor may not have attended college does not mean that a child conceived from that donor would not excel academically.
What truly matters is having a healthy baby whom the intended parents can love and nurture to become the best person they can be. Therefore, during the egg donation stage, it’s more crucial to consider whether the egg donor has successfully donated eggs in the past and whether that donation resulted in a successful live birth.
Donor Databases
When reviewing egg donor databases, we strongly advise intended parents to inquire whether the success rates for egg donors are measured in terms of live births rather than simply the ability to achieve pregnancy using donor eggs. The ultimate goal for intended parents is to have a live birth. Many IVF procedures may result in a pregnancy that only lasts a few weeks or months. Therefore, it's essential for intended parents to ask about the donor’s track record for live births and consider selecting a known donor with a successful history. Additionally, asking the right questions can help intended parents choose the ideal egg donor. We suggest considering the following questions when selecting an egg donor:
1. Has the donor been successful with donations resulting in a live birth?
2. Does she have her own healthy children?
3. Are her and her family’s medical histories acceptable, or are there too many medical risks in her background?
4. What about her outward physical appearance? Ethnicity, height, weight, eye color?
5. What about demonstrated intelligence?
Facing Hard Decisions as a Future Parent
As an intended parent, you will undoubtedly encounter situations that require you to make important decisions. We highlight the example of selective reduction here, but the surrogacy process, in general, involves choosing between several alternatives from the very beginning. For instance, should you opt for a single embryo transfer, or should you transfer two or three embryos? Should you continue with a twin pregnancy even if the Nuchal Translucency (NT) and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) diagnostic tests indicate that reducing to a singleton could increase the chances of a successful full-term and healthy pregnancy?
There is always a chance that you might find yourself faced with conflicting emotions and thoughts, as illustrated by the multifetal pregnancy reduction scenario. Although we have successfully carried triplets in certain cases, there are unavoidable situations where a twin pregnancy could lead to unsatisfactory outcomes, including miscarriage or preterm delivery. Thanks to our experienced doctors and staff members, we have minimized these risks, but they still exist. Therefore, it is essential for intended parents to be informed that they may have to confront difficult decisions during their surrogacy journey.
Risk Management
The same can be said for embryo transfer failures, miscarriages, and other unwanted situations. While no one can guarantee that everything will proceed smoothly on the first attempt, we can assure you that the risks associated with the process are meticulously managed and carefully monitored by our staff members. This ensures that risks remain consistently minimized while maintaining exceptionally high success rates. Additionally, our consultation specialists are available 24/7 to assist future parents in understanding the process better. They provide instant updates, support decision-making, and empower parents to make informed choices, ensuring that the process they care about so deeply is progressing smoothly.
