Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine insemination is a type of artificial insemination that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus. During normal sexual intercourse, only relatively small number of sperm reach the woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes, where fertilization takes place. In contrast, IUI inserts large amounts of the best-performing sperm directly into the uterus, thus increasing the chances of fertilization. During the procedure, sperm are introduced into the woman’s uterus through a tube. Hormonal medications are used in conjunction with the treatment to enhance conditions for pregnancy.
Reasons
IUI is used when regular sexual intercourse or hormonal medications have not been successful, as well as in cases of low sperm motility. Other reasons why the IUI might be recommended include:
-
Ovulation problems
-
Ejaculation problems
-
Unexplained infertility
-
Mild endometriosis
-
Physical difficulties with sexual intercourse
Success Rates
The success rates of IUI will vary depending on a number of factors, including the number of cycle attempts and maternal age. Success rates generally range from 10% to 20% per cycle. Additionally, after multiple cycles, chances of success may cumulatively increase. Depending on your circumstances and the doctor’s advice, if IUI cycles are unsuccessful, in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be recommended. In IVF, the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the body and then transferred to the uterus. However, up until this moment we have consistently demonstrated high success rates through the practice of IUI.
IUI in Conjunction with Hormonal Medication
Fertility medication can increase the number of mature eggs and help regulate ovulation timing, thereby improving your chances of becoming pregnant. Depending on your specific situation, our doctors may recommend hormonal medications to stimulate ovulation. For this purpose, follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) are used to promote follicular development and enhance the chances of successful fertilization. These medications are administered via self-injection in the abdomen. Our fertility specialists and consultation team will provide you with further information about the medications and the length of the treatment and answer other related questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to call us; our team is always here to help you!
